WHAT ARE MARIONETTE LINES
AND WHAT
ARE THE CAUSES?
BOOK CONSULTATION
Marionette lines (also known as melomental folds,) are the creases that extend from the corners of the mouth downward to the chin. These lines develop due to a variety of factors including natural ageing, loss of collagen and elastin, repeated facial expressions, sun exposure, smoking, and genetic predisposition.
The skin in this area loses elasticity and underlying fat pads diminish, causing the skin to sag and form these characteristic lines. Factors such as the downward pull of muscles around the mouth and gravitational effects also contribute to their formation.
Treatment options for marionette lines include Profhilo® injections, which stimulate collagen and elastin production to improve skin laxity and hydration. Additionally, anti-wrinkle injections can relax the muscles around the mouth, reducing the downward pull that contributes to marionette lines.
Dermal fillers, particularly those containing hyaluronic acid, can be precisely injected into marionette lines to restore lost volume and support, plumping the skin, and creating a more youthful appearance. Other options such as thread lifts, skin peels, and microneedling can also stimulate collagen production, improving skin texture and reducing the prominence of marionette lines over time.
